Description
The Staghorn Fern gets its name from its fronds that are shaped like the horns of an elk or other large herbivore. The fern also produces another type of leaf that is kidney shaped and is considered to be sterile. They protect the plants roots from damage or desiccation as they are normally found growing off the sides of trees in it its natural environment. The leaves have a unique appearance and texture as they turn brown and papery with age. A very mature Staghorn Fern can grow to be around 2 to 3 feet tall and wide.
Plant Biography
Staghorn ferns are native to tropical and temperate areas of South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Guinea. These uniquely shaped ferns are epiphytic and are naturally found growing on trees, rocks, or tropical gardens. The antler shaped fronds produce spores on their underside and in the right conditions will germinate on surrounding trees.
